In a recent Financial Advisor article, our Senior Wealth Advisor, Matt Saneholtz, CFA, CFP®, EA, was quoted on the implications of the Medicare industry upheaval during the upcoming open enrollment period. He shared his insights on the matter, discussing why Medigap may be a good option despite their high premiums.
The Medicare industry is facing major disruptions ahead of the 2025 open enrollment, with insurers cutting benefits, raising premiums, and exiting certain markets. This has led to increased confusion for beneficiaries, particularly in deciding between Medicare Advantage and Medigap plans. The changes could result in a more chaotic enrollment period as retirees scramble to navigate new policies and reassess their healthcare options. Medicare Advantage plans, while popular, often come with network restrictions, whereas Medigap provides greater flexibility at a higher cost. These shifts are expected to cause some challenges for retirees.
Medigap, also known as a Supplement plan, offers flexibility by allowing enrollees to see any provider who accepts Medicare without needing pre-approval. This freedom, despite higher premiums, is why Matt highlights its benefits for those who travel, like snowbirds and RV enthusiasts, saying, “I know clients who used Supplement plans to access care at various hospitals that suited their needs while traveling.”
With the upcoming changes in Medicare, individuals should take proactive steps to prepare. Reviewing current coverage and understanding how benefits or premiums may change is essential to assess which option best suits their personal healthcare needs and budget.
