Earlier this month, the stock market took a dramatic plunge, causing investors worldwide to reconsider their strategies. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell nearly 1,000 points as a global market sell-off spread across Asia and Europe. Amidst growing fears of a recession and concerns about the Federal Reserve’s interest rate policies, many investors have been left wondering how to navigate these uncertain times.
Our Portfolio Manager, Chad NeSmith, CFA, CFP® offered his seasoned perspective on the situation. As someone who has been fielding numerous calls from clients, Chad provided reassurance and strategic insights on how to approach the market during such turbulent periods.
Chad emphasized that while the market’s plunge was concerning, much of the panic was driven by noise rather than fundamental changes. “It’s kind of given the market something to worry about when we haven’t had something to worry about in a long time,” he said. He acknowledges the chatter around an impending war in the Middle East and the volatility of Big Tech stocks but urges investors not to panic.
“Technology – it works really well on the upside. It carried us last year and this is just a small hiccup they’re having. When expectations for these stocks are so high, all it takes is small changes in those expectations to have big impacts on prices,” Chad explained. He strives to remind investors to maintain perspective and not react impulsively to short-term market movements.
While fears of a recession are growing, Chad believes that even if a recession does occur, it won’t resemble the severe downturns of 2008 or the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, he views the current market correction as an opportunity. “It opens up opportunities to purchase things when they’re lower and do what’s called tax-loss harvesting; that is to lock in some tax losses to offset your gains,” he added.
Chad highlighted the importance of focusing on long-term investment strategies and using market downturns to one’s advantage by buying undervalued assets and strategically managing tax liabilities.
Staying well informed in uncertain times is crucial. Chad shared his detailed insights on navigating the stock market turmoil in an interview with NBC 6. To gain a deeper understanding of his approach, you can watch the full segment here.
