Market Insights into Action: Highlights from our January 2026 Quarterly Market Update Webinar

Recently, our Portfolio Manager, Charles “Chad” NeSmith, CFA, CFP®, and CEO, Marianela Collado, CPA/PFS, CFP®, CDS®, hosted a Market Update Webinar to discuss today’s market environment. What’s driving the market today, what’s uncertain, and how can investors position themselves thoughtfully amidst the noise? While headlines can focus on what’s unpredictable, Chad and Marianela share that long term success can come from focusing on what can be controlled, and planning ahead with intention.

Planning Ahead During High Stakes

One key theme emphasized by Marianela was the importance of proactive planning, especially during major financial events such as the sale of a business, real estate transactions, or concentrated stock positions. These moments often come with significant tax implications, and timing can play a critical role in the outcome.

Chad emphasized Marianela’s point, sharing that there can be more opportunities to manage capital gains through tax-loss harvesting and other thoughtful portfolio adjustments when advisors are brought into the conversation earlier than later. A diversified portfolio, in particular, can help create flexibility which allows losses in one area to be offset by gains in another. Though loss-harvesting opportunities may feel limited, preparation and open conversations can be an effective tool for investors.

Consumer Strength in GDP Amidst Low Confidence

Chad also discussed the broader economic picture, which may have come as a surprise to observers. Despite concerns around tariffs, slowing growth, and low consumer confidence, economic data, especially GDP, has remained strong. A major contributor has been consumer spending, which makes up a significant portion of economic activity. Most of this spending has been driven by higher-income households, whose spending has remained steady amidst uncertainty. This dynamic has helped to support economic growth beyond initial expectations.

Diversified Portfolios in Action

From a market performance perspective, the past year offered insight into the power of diversification. Chad discussed the strong returns of U.S. stocks, and how international markets played an equally important role. Both developed and emerging markets posted high gains, showing how global exposure can positively affect your portfolio. Diversification isn’t just about predicting which asset will outperform next, it’s about building a portfolio that’s designed for a range of outcomes.

Focus on What You Can Control

Marianela emphasized the idea that markets, politics, and global events will always be unpredictable. What investors can control are their financial plans, tax strategies, risk management, and long-term discipline. By staying focused on these elements, investors can tune out the noise of uncertainty, and navigate their plan with confidence rather than reaction. A well-constructed plan can help turn volatility into a manageable part of the journey.

Let’s Continue the Conversation

Financial outcomes are rarely driven by a single headline or market move. Rather, they are shaped by how well actions align with individual goals, timelines, and tax considerations. By understanding the broader concepts, investors can make more informed, confident decisions, especially during times of uncertainty.

If any of these topics resonated with you, or you’d like to discuss how current market conditions relate to your personal goals, we invite you to contact us. We’d be happy to schedule a meeting and explore how thoughtful planning can help you move forward with clarity and confidence.
