Recently, our Senior Wealth Advisor, Yesenia Realejo, CFP®, and Wealth Advisor, Francheska Ruiz, CFP®, hosted a Life Insurance Planning Basics Webinar to share a broad overview of life insurance, including what it is, how it works, and how it can be thoughtfully used for income replacement and estate planning.

Is Life Insurance an Investment?

One key point emphasized by Yesenia was that life Insurance is generally designed as a protection tool rather than an investment. Its primary purpose is to safeguard an income stream and provide financial stability if there were to be an unexpected loss. While some policies may have features that resemble savings or value accumulation, this is more of a complementary role.

Life insurance is not generally intended to build wealth or serve as a primary strategy for financial growth. Instead, it plays a role within a broader financial plan, serving as a cushion for loved ones. By understanding the differences between the elements of a financial plan, individuals can make more informed decisions about which they choose to implement.

When Do I Not Need Life Insurance?

Additionally, Yesenia mentioned the case of when an individual may not need life insurance. Usually, when a family has many dependents like small children and are still in their accumulation years, protection can be recommended if an unexpected event were to occur. When individuals get older and eventually retire, individuals may find life insurance less necessary depending on their financial situation.

The Nuances of Insurance Policies

Another point of discussion by Yesenia and Francheska was the importance of understanding how different types of life insurance policies actually function, especially term and permanent options. Term life insurance can be relatively straightforward: you pay a set premium, and the policy provides a death benefit if you pass away within a specified period. Permanent policies can be a bit more complex and come with additional risks. A major concern could be “underfunding” as these policies may not always remain stable and increase costs to keep the policy active.

Additionally, these policies may be frequently presented as tools for building cash savings, but the projections used to illustrate their growth can be often unrealistically optimistic. This can lead to misunderstandings or disappointment when it comes to their performance.

Let’s Continue the Conversation

Life insurance needs are not one-size-fits-all, and different policies and requirements may seem confusing. It can be helpful to carefully analyze insurance policies and view them within the broader context of your financial plan, rather than a standalone entity.

If any of these topics stood out to you, or you’d like to discuss how life insurance fits into your broader financial plan, we invite you to contact us.  We can help you think through how it may play a role within your overall strategy.
