Recently, our Portfolio Manager, Charles “Chad” NeSmith, CFA, CFP®, and Senior Wealth Advisor, Yesenia Realejo, CFP®, hosted a Market Update Webinar to discuss key topics shaping today’s economy and investment landscape. From the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) to recent developments in gold and the stock market, Chad and Yesenia shared insights to help guide clients through today’s market environment.
The session opened with a discussion on AI’s growing impact. Yesenia highlighted how rapidly advancing AI technology is reshaping the economy and daily life, noting emerging risks such as AI-driven scams, including deep-fake videos and voice-cloned calls. She offered practical strategies for protecting personal and financial information in this evolving landscape. Chad discussed AI’s broader economic influence, noting that a significant portion of U.S. GDP is now tied to AI-related spending, underscoring its increasing role in modern economic activity.
Chad also examined gold and market concentration, noting that while gold has historically been viewed as a risk management asset, its recent volatility has challenged its effectiveness as an inflation hedge. He explained how concentrated the stock market has become, with ten major companies representing roughly 40% of the S&P 500. Using this example, Chad highlighted the importance of diversification in a portfolio, which can help investors navigate market fluctuations. He also discussed potential impacts of Federal Reserve interest rate changes on stocks and bonds, noting that when rates come down and there’s no recession, it’s a great market environment for both.
Below, we’ve highlighted some takeaways from the discussion for a concise look at the factors shaping today’s market:
